Because of its tropical climate and the government's conservation efforts, Cuba has many species of animals and reptiles whose population is recovering from near extinction. One of these is the Cuban Solenodon, a rodent that was thought to be wiped out by 1970. Luckily, a few were discovered in the mid 70's and efforts to protect and increase its numbers have been successful though it is still rare.
